John Brzenk - Time will show whether I return to sport

As is already known will not see John Brzenk at the table on this year's Nemiroff World Cup. It does not mean that John will not come this year to Poland. At the invitation of Igor Mazurenko Brzenk will be the special guest of this year's World Cup Professionals - Nemiroff World Cup 2011.

We asked an American armwrestling Champion what happened, that he can not compete at the World Cup, which will be held on 14-15th of October 2011 in Mazurkas Conference Centre in Ozarow Mazowiecki (near Warsaw). Below the direct relationship of John Brzenk.

On May 4th I had arthroscopic surgery on my right shoulder. I believe this injury was the result of throwing a softball almost 20 years ago. I can clearly remember hearing a ripping sound, and struggled for many months with my Armwrestling afterwards. But being in my twenties this injury did stabilize and felt comfortable enough where I was able to deal with it. I never considered going to the doctor. I would have never have considered surgery. Through the years I would be reminded of this injury over and over again when I would get involved in a tough match.

The shoulder joint would get inflamed and it would take months to calm back down. This was the situation after I pulled Denis in Vegas. My shoulder felt so

unstable for months…then the UAL match with Jerry caused may arm to feel like it was going to fall out of my socket. But I continued to work through it without having an Ortho look at it. Practice was getting tougher and tougher though, with continued pain to the point where I was having trouble sleeping through the night. This was the point when I decided I had to have it looked at and forget about the Armwrestling career.

The result of the surgery was a reattachment of the labrum ring. My labrum was torn nearly 360 degrees. The Surgeon secured it with 6 separate anchors. Time will tell if I can return to the sport and at what level. The arm feels good for everyday use now and there is little to no pain while sleeping. I have pulled so many years with this tear that my hope is that with enough time it will become much more stable and stronger than I can recently remember.

It’s been four months and it is still very weak and any side pressure causes enough discomfort that it makes me think I will reinjure it. It will be a slow process to build the strength and confidence back on the table. The doctor seems to think it may take up to a year before I am fully recovered. I’m not going to rush it…I fully plan on making a return to this sport.

How did it happen that you started to compete in Poland and what do you think of Poland?

I like and enjoy Poland very much. I have traveled to Poland several times. I have been to the Nemiroff once before and was not satisfied with my performance. I have always wanted to come back and try again.

Is Nemiroff World Cup a tournament comparable to the Golden Bear, or is it better and what does the start at Nemiroff World Cup mean for you?

I believe there is little doubt that the Nemiroff World Cup is currently the most prestigious tournament in the world. I have never been to the Golden Bear.

Do you prefer to compete in regular tournaments, or in the Armfight system (multi-round)?

I prefer Armfight System, to the current unseeded bracket tournament system. If tournaments would seed their brackets, I may change my mind.

How do you perceive the sports level of European competitors today?

The overall sports level of the European competitors is probably superior to the Americans, they definitely tend to be younger. Although, the few elite American pullers are on par with the elite pullers from around the world. I myself am not experienced enough to lend a qualified opinion.

Why we did't saw you in Europe since few years?

I quit arm wrestling 4 years ago and have not competed anywhere. I was very focused and committed to the NAL organization founded by Travis Bagent. This organization was on track to bring a whole new level of professionalism and stature to the sport in the USA.

When the NAL ceased I was very disappointed and could not find any reason to continue. So I quit, I stopped watching videos, stopped reading the message boards, stopped practicing, stopped talking to all my arm wrestling friends. I never intended to compete again, even now I am a little surprised that I am once again competing.

What do you think about John Brzenk? Do you think that he will finish his sport (armwrestling) activity?

I don’t know. John Brzenk is the most versatile and competent arm wrestler ever, and probably will be for a long time. To my knowledge there is no other puller that can compete at the world level in so many different weight categories. I cannot speak for John, but I do not believe he will leave arm wrestling anytime soon. I quit, unsuccessfully. in my opinion it takes more dedication to quit the sport than it does to participate. Then again John is an enigma and he’ll probably set the standard for retirement as he has for competing.

It is often heard that you have won many things in your life. Is this true? What is the most expensive prize you won? You can sum up a little all of your awards?

I have won a few prizes of $1,000.00 when arm wrestling was at its recent height of popularity in the USA. I am not as accomplished as most of the other proliferate pullers from America

Do you intend to fight with Denis Cyplenkov and how would you rate this competitor?

I believe Denis Cyplenkov is a premier puller. I hope I make it far enough in the Open category to meet this gentleman.

Do you drink alcohol? What kind of?

Kentucky Bourbon, Just like the angels in Heaven.

Where do you work and what you do every day?

I design machines for the mining industry. I work at Boart Longyear.

What car do you drive? Do you have a motorcycle?

My wife has a Ford Expedition, I have a 1993 Dodge pickup.

Are you a recognized person in the United States?

Yes, not like Mr. Brzenk or Mr. Bagent or some of the other heavyweights, but I am recognized at most tournaments in the USA.

Do you have children? If so, do they wrestle like you?

I have a 14 year old son he top rolls. I have a 12 year old son, he pulls inside.

Have you ever thought of ending your career?

I quit once, if I do well at Nemiroff, I’ll probably quit again. If I do poorly, I will train harder and come back next year.

At what tournaments will we be able to see you in 2011?

So far I only have plans to attend Nemiroff. I sometimes pull the tournaments my sons compete in, but this is not always the case.

Nemiroff 2011 – Khadayev will not come!

Chermen Khadayev (Russia) retreated from participation in Nemiroff World Cup 2011because of elbow injury.

At 39th Vendetta armwrestling experts, fans and lovers , who believed in his endurance and victory in duel with Krasimir Kostadinov, were very surprised and disappointed with Chermen’s fight. Now everyone is shocked by information that Chermen will not take part in this prestigious international tournament Nemiroff World Cup 2011.

What happened at Vendetta and before Nemiroff World Cup 2011?

Many people probably already know that Chermen has big problems with pain in elbows. He has not already take part in any kind of left hand competition for some time. On the right, which unfortunately also started to cause him problems (he fully straighten it because of elbow problems), he has been still fighting and achieved fairly good results. That was by then! The duel with Krasimir prepared at 100%, made Chermen incapable to show his famous endurance because the pain in his elbow. From this our surprise with result of a duel follows.

In Slovakia, where Chermen has lived for four months, the tournament at which he again appeared at the table took place last weekend. And here the injury made its presence felt clearly with a sharp pain in the elbow.

Of course, in this case his participation in the World Cup is impossible. Lubomir Jagneszak promised help in finding a good surgeon who will prepare and conduct an operation of Chermen’s hand. Most likely, unfortunately, treatment and return to the form it will take at least a year.

We wish Chermen fast recovery, return to the table and participation in interesting clashes!

It’s ok... Pushkar before Nemiroff 2011

Andrey Pushkar will be clear and strong part of the Ukrainian Team at this year's Cup. Experienced, twenty-six years old, rich in junior and senior championships, known and liked in Poland (the memorable fight with Denis Cyplenkov in Sopot finals). Biceps size 43, forearm 49, weight 120 kg, but these are last year’s data. What will he show in Ozarow Mazowiecki at the World Cup?

I managed to have a short chat with Andrey - I heard that while preparations of "It’s ok", so everything is allright, there is no injury, he’s getting better.

Who does he want to meet in the cup-final? Of course, we assume in advance that he enters the finale. Andrey says without hesitation, with Dennis. So, following the blow, I asked him how he sees his chances? - "Everything depends on my form that day!" – Pushkar answered.

Did he prepare any special "secret weapon", some "way" to beat a potential adversary? - "Of course, I used a lot of diverse exercises, to do well on 14th and 15th October in Poland" – he replied.

What else, apart from heavy workouts do you do every day?

Andrey Pushkar: I am the President of the Federation in our circuit, I organize competitions, conduct training at an university of economics.

Do you practice any other sport apart from armwrestling?

Andrey Pushkar: I’m trying armlifting.

Do you think this sport may become as popular as armwrestling?

Andrey Pushkar: Not really. I treat it as an addition to other exercises for armwrestling.

One more private question, what kind of music do you like?

Andrey Pushkar: I listen to music mostly during training. Heavy training and heavy music, so Rammstein.

Nemiroff 2011 - Brzenk prompts and bets on!

There are only 30 days left to the start of the Professionals’ World Cup . We managed to have a word with John, who this time will be at the competition by another way of.

Red: Tell me honestly, if you help Travis in his preparations?

John Brzenk: I live on the other end of the U.S.A, so I cannot help him directly at the table or at the gym. But I will be with him on the day of the start. I'll be able to "turn him up to the max", to make him use all his energy, all speed potential at the start.

Red: Namely - what "way for Denis” will you suggest Travis?

John: He must be aggressive and fast! Bagnet is amazing on the left hand, Denis is also a "natural" left-handed. I'm sure that he will not get frightened by the huge mass of Denis’s muscles. Rather, he (Cyplenkov) will have his hands full with Bagentem. Travis will come out confident, he’ll be aggressive. Denis will not even tale the liberty of a second of inattention or distraction. He must be constantly vigilant. If he wants to win (and he certainly does) he must do that quickly. This is the only chance for him to win.

Red: Who else, beside listed ones, do you see as favorites?

John: Oh, it largely depends on the way the ladder is drawn, who meets who. One of the dead cert favorites will have a hard way through eliminations and if "pumps out' his arms – there will be many others waiting for his place. At this tournament there will be many potential candidates for the title of the Strongest.

Red: How is your injury, is there any improvement?

John: My arm is still very weak, I feel pain. There is, however, some progress and I hope to return to the table next year.

Nemiroff 2011 - Babayev vs Zoloev

Rustam Babaev is an offensive puller, while Zoloev's control is better than his own offense.it is also because Rustam's wrist is stronger than Zoloev's wrist.so i believe Rustam will have a better start and if the match stops then the position that it stops will also matter because if Zoloev stops Rustam in his hook lock then i believe Rustam can not finish Zoloev.but if Zoloev can not stop Rustam within his hook lock then he may not have chance to do much.

Zoloev steps up in a heavier category at Zloty to face Rustam.in 80kg i would bet on Zoloev but in 86kg (that Rustam will probably be minimum 90kg by competetion time) Rustam is the favorite,JMO.

D. Cyplenkov - Let Them Fear!

Tuesday, 19th September morning, a quick phone to Russia to ask about the favourite of Nemiroff World Cup 2011. An interview full of exclamation points to show the strong tone of Master’s answers.

Denis, do you realize that everyone is getting ready just for you?

Denis Cyplenkov: Ideal know about it! Let them get prepared! I also cannot wait until I meet them!

To readers: You have to believe me that at this point, his voice sounded really convincingly. Denis is confident and it can clearly be heard in his every word. So I asked whether he changed anything in preparations in contrast to last year?

Denis Cyplenkov: I did not change anything! Let others make changes!

What are you doing now, 28 days before the tournament?

Denis Cyplenkov: For a few more days just a normal training and then just relax.

Is everything going according to your plan?

Denis Cyplenkov: It cannot be hidden that I have a slight flu, but will cope with it.

You're the favourite, but certainly you take into consideration that the struggle will be difficult. Who can possibly cause you trouble?

Denis Cyplenkov: Trouble? Too much said ... But I have never fought with Travis Bagent yet, Jerry Caderatte will also be there and many others. Maybe someone new, unknown will also appear...

Perhaps, however, you are preparing some kind of "secret weapon"?

Denis Cyplenkov: Since it supposes to be the secret let this be ...

T. Bagent – I’ll Beat Every Player on the Other Side of the Table!

Bad news for players from Europe!

John Brzenk not only will be the guest of honour, but also will perform as a corner of the American team. Athletes from the U.S.A will have a counsellor and "Motivator" in John - as Travis Bagent called it in a conversation with us. Travis also pointed his compatriot Jerry Caderatte as a favourite of the Cup. What's interesting - Jerry in an interview said that he is getting ready for Dennis Cyplenkow and Andrey Pushkar. Maybe he did not want to reveal the strength of the American Team?

What is Travis Bagent like? Everyone should remember his fight from November 2006 in Manchester, where he provoked Semerenko to a small quarrel on a Premier Travel Inn club stage, even guards appeared, Ron Bath and John Brzenk were looking at it with a great disapproval. Travis then drew 3:3. During this long, full of tugs, tears, fouls, fights in belts clashes Bagent showed sport cunning, he was setting his opponent's teeth on edge, he was acting theatrically, but ... he almost rapped himself against the limits of the Armwrestling Code, unwritten laws "On the behaviour at the table". What he did was on the border. Every sport, even the most elegant (and Armwrestling is the one) has its "Enfant terrible"

In the seventies he was Ilie Nastase in tennis. He played provocatively, arguing with referees, , he disconcerted his opponents, but also had a great sense of humour and his manoeuvrings were always "more fun, than annoying."

But let’s go back to the table - regardless of additional stage attractions, we can count on great fights, when Travis Bagent approaches the table.

How are your preparations for the World Cup?

Travis Bagent: I am as STRONG as only I can be. I'm SMARTER than I was before. I'm excited about the prospect of fighting at Zloty Tur!

How are going to defeat Denis?

Travis Bagent: Oh! I’m focused not only on him. Andrey Pushkar, and Jerry Caderatte will stand in my way as well as Denis. I feel ready for them, more than ever in my life.I’ll beat every player on the other side of the table!

Is John helping you in preparing tactics "for" Denis Cyplenkow, whom, after all, he knows perfectly?

Travis Bagent: All American armwrestlers will benefit from this, the Great John will be in our corner. He is a wonderful coach and "Motivator" not only for me, for our team, but for all armwrestlers of the world.

What are in your opinion your greatest assets in a fight?

Travis Bagent: My speed, technique and - invariably -

will to fight or "No Compromises!"

Rustam Babayev – the Form Raising

He appeared at Zloty Tur in Poland for the first time in 2001. A fight with Cvetan Gashevski, who then won, lasted 23 seconds. In 2002 - he was undefeated and won on the w way he beat Zbyszek Chmielewski. One year later, he won. In 2006, as an Armpower correspondent wrote, he was "straggly" beaten by his brother, the younger brother! 2008 was a total domination in his weight class and a wonderful cup- final (lost, but aligned) with John Brzenk in the open. 2010 was the division of medals on the left and right hand in the weight and twice the podium in the open between the brothers. Who am I describing?

The Babayev Brothers. I decided that the older brother Rustam will be enough for me to interview. Now regret that I hadn’t also asked his younger brother, because Rustam turned out to be more aloof, than when we met in Poland. Oh well! Maybe he had treme. I’m passing on these few sentences from one of the brothers, from Rustam.

Hello Rustam! Last year, AT the Nemiroff World Cup I had the impression that you do it like the Klitschko brothers. They promised their mother that will not fight with each other. Tell me, so by pulling strings whether I right?

Rustam Babayev: Let the scenes of my fights with my brother remain a mystery yet ...

Still? How long are we supposed to wait? Well, it's goining to be hard. How will it be this year?

Rustam Babayev: At Nemiroff 2011, we cannot take part in the same weight class. It’s the organizer’s decision.

Right in my opinion, but it’s still a pity ... And how’s your form, how are the preparations?

Rustam Babayev: The form is raising, we haven’t started training hard yet.

For these years, when you fought in Poland –

which fights were the toughest ones for you?

Rustam Babayev: With John Brzenk and Andrey Pushkar.

Will we also see you and your younger brother on the podium of the open class this year?

Rustam Babayev: When it comes to results in the open weight, nothing can be really said now.

This is what you can! Rustam, as from the perspective of your experience what do you think of our tournament?

Rustam Babayev: These are competitions at a really high level.

How about your and your brother’s popularity in Ukraine, do people recognize you on the street?

Rustam Babayev: Those who know the sport – do.

Who will beat Denis Cyplenkov?

World Cup 2011 tournaments - David, David Shead!

David Shead: Hi to all fans at armpower.net! Hi press office Cup! It is only now answering your questions, because the refereeing in Italy, Germany, Norway, yet somewhere ... really a lot of work. But now I am ready, ask!

Okay, however I’d like to make it clear that now they are questions to an expert, not a referee. David, can anyone defeat Denis Cyplenkov?

David: Yes he could be beaten but I don’t think Travis is good enough with his right and I don’t like Jerry Caderatte’s wrestling technique when he wrestles inside although it is very effective he is using the

A leverage of his bones to drag his opponents down, but I don’t think he will win the world cup with it because if Denis is smart he should grip Jerry very low and this would result in it being a hook match and no one will beat Denis in the hook the only thing is if Denis gets tired wrestling Jerry then Andrey Pushkar will beat Denis as there is only a small difference between Denis and Andrey and I think Andrey could beat Denis if he changed the technique he uses a little, But I am not the one wrestling Denis and it’s easy to say but not so easy to do.

And Travis on the left?

David: Travis Bagnet is a left hand specialist so could win the left but with his bad behaviour in some of his matches he might not even make the final with the high level of no nonsense refereeing there is at the Nemiroff world cup so we will have to see.

Any other favourites?

David: Ion Oncescu, would be one of my favourites at 95kg as I helped train him but I do not know who will be there.

Who else, in your opinion may appear in the open class?

David: I would like to see Devon Larratt come and take part with his great power and ability at the table he could beat Andrey Pushkar and Denis Cyplenkov but I would not put money on it, either way, but they would be great matches to see. They may be historical duels. And one more thing worth seeing – weather Travis Bagnet can win with the left hand or not.

David, let’s now move on to questions for a referee. Which of the fights during your career was the hardest to conduct?

David: I don’t really consider some fights harder than others, although referees do have to work more in some matches than others it’s all just part of the job.

Who is the most difficult competitor at the table?

David: The fast competitors like Ion Oncescu, who move so fast it is like a blur in front of your eyes.

Do you like coming to Poland?

David: YES YES YES I have been many times now for the WAF Worlds, European Championships, the Polish Nationals and many Zloty Tur Cups like this one and I always have a great time.

And what about being a referee at Nemiroff Cup, is anything special?

David: Yes the Nemiroff is the best of the best of competitor’s so it’s an honour for a referee to be invited here, especially as a head referee. I and the others want to be at our best here just the same as the wrestlers.

What’s the best at the Cup and in Poland?

David: Well actually Igor Mazurenko, he is the best show organizer in the world and never tries to influence the referee’s decisions so we have a lot of respect for him. And the polish girls are pretty good too.

Which city did you like best Gdansk or Warsaw?

David: I don’t know Warszawa very well so I would have to say Gdansk

What are the most memorable moments of the Nemiroff?

David: Last year in the final with Denis Cyplenkov & Andrey Pushkar when Andrey took Denis to within an inch of the pin pad before Denis managed to roll him over and win.

I feel excited, as I'll meet the elite of World Armwrestling!

2. How was your training for this event?

I have trained hardly for the competition, in the hall and on the table with my teammates from "Adrenaline" Club (Sofia).

3. What are your expectations for Your presentation on this competition?

I expect for myself to present good and yet, among such kind of World Armwrestling favorites I have nothing to loose, on the contrary, from now on I have to prove myself.

My preparation for the Worlds '2011 goes with smashing-heavy training sessions.

- By your opinion, who will be your main opponents?

Main rival for me will be everyone, who plays in my weight class.

- What is your program-minimum, that you want to achieve?

Like minimum, I'll try to win a medal on both two hands.

- What do you want to say to your teammates from the National Team of Bulgaria?

I want to wish success to my colleagues from the Bulgarian National Team.

Надявам се на финал в моята категория да са двама българи - Емил Илчев и Краси Костадинов.

Очакванията ми лично за мен: на първо място да съм здрав, да покажа най-доброто от себе си. И второ, надявам се да спечеля медал.

Before the Worlds' 2011 I feel myself in very good condition.

- How goes your training for the World Armwrestling Championship?

My preparation consists from intensive and heavy trainings, together with the proper good recreation.

- By your opinion, who will be your main opponents?

I hope on the final event in my category to be two Bulgarians: Emil Ilchev and Krasimir Kostadinov.

- What is your program-minimum, that you want to achieve?

My expectations especially for me: firstly, to be robust and to show the best of myself. Second, I hope to win a medal.

- What do you want to say to your teammates from the National Team of Bulgaria?

- I feel very excited and often I can't sleep from excitement.

- How goes your training for the World Armwrestling Championship?

- My preparation for the Worlds championship takes place in hard training - in the gym, as well as at my job.

- By your opinion, who will be your main opponents?

- Each competitor is my opponent, I know well my rivals and I have tactic against everyone of them.

- What is your program-minimum that you want to achieve?

- I expect no surprises and I hope to can give everything from myself, even what happened. Considering the efforts I've made - I think, that I must be in the triad.

- What do you want to say to your teammates from the National Team of Bulgaria?

- To my colleagues from the Bulgarian national team I wish a lot of good luck and good performance on the World championship.

- Всеки състезател е мой съперник, познавам ги добре и имам тактика срещу всеки.

- Не очаквам изненади и се надявам да мога да дам всичко от себе си - пък, каквото се получи. Имайки предвид усилията, които съм положил - мисля, че трябва да съм в призовата тройка.

На колегите от Националния ни тим пожелавам много късмет и добро представяне на Световното първенство.

- I train seriously, often in two phases, and every Tuesday I take part in competition in "Vitosha Armrestling" club.

- By your opinion, who will be your main opponents?

- If there is no new Armwrestling star, the main contenders for me are all Russian-speaking players.

- What is your program-minimum that you want to achieve?

- As a minimum, I set my goal for ranking in the top three.

- What do you want to say to your teammates from the National Team of Bulgaria?

- I want to wish success to all boys from our national team, especially those, with whose we train together.

- Concerning my rivals - we will see. I strive to be good trained for everybody!!!

- Относно съперниците ми - ще видим... Стремя се да съм добре подготвен за всички!!!

- Програма минимум и програма максимум - не желая да коментирам...
